Girls Helping Girls Attend Colour

Hillsong Collected

I arrived in South Africa from the UK in January last year to volunteer on the Community Care Team at Hillsong Cape Town for five months. Part of what I did was visit St Anne’s shelter and spend time with the wonderful women there.

When it came to Colour Conference, I knew I had to do whatever I could to make it possible for my new friends to come. I had been to the Colour in London and knew the life-changing impact it had. Some of my friends in the UK had already sent gifts to the ladies at St Anne’s and were keen to help. They sent enough money to sponsor everyone for the day.

The day itself was incredible. I especially loved watching the women’s mesmerised faces as the ballet opener started. This was so unlike anything they had experienced before. However, the standout moment for me came at the end of the day when one of the ladies revealed her dream to become a teacher. She wanted to be able to educate women who are HIV-positive.

When I first met this particular young woman, she was unable to look anyone in the eye. Then she accepted Jesus as her Saviour and became part of Hillsong Church. At Colour, she found her identity as a treasured daughter of the King of kings and experienced His unconditional love for her. She’d found a church home that accepted her and a group of friends who believed in her. She will never be the same.

For me, Colour will happen in London this year. We are excitedly planning for all that is to come. I will be praying for Colour in Cape Town. I love that we are all part of a global gathering.
