I remember it was the Thursday before Good Friday last year… we were all at our weekly creative gathering in the Chapel. The aim of the night was to rehearse for our Easter services. There was much to be accomplished, we needed to get the presentations right. We wanted to make sure we'd done everything we could to ensure that across the weekend, people would see Jesus through our offerings of creativity and worship. We needed to keep the night moving!
JD, Jad and I had read the Easter story to our team and then Matty Crocker & Brooke Ligertwood decided to share "a little something" they had been working on… the guitar strummed…
Man of sorrows,
Lamb of God
It was holy…
It was one of those moments when time seemed to stop…
Our team worshipped ...
Arms raised in surrender…
Hearts arrested at the enormity of what it meant for the God Man, Jesus, to give His life that we might live...
"Now my debt is paid it is paid in full "
The chant rose up across our chapel...
"See the stone is rolled away
Behold the empty tomb"
And the place resounded in spontaneous cheers and applause.
"Hallelujah God be praised
He is risen from the dead"
The song was brand new, it was too soon to use in our services that started only 12 hours later, but that song set up our worship and creative team with a fresh view on the passion story. We went into Easter with a new gratitude and awareness & a song echoing in our hearts.
This year it will form one of the key pieces of our Easter presentation - it is beautiful and stirring. As a church, part of what we believe God has graced us for, is to help the greater Church find songs to worship and to champion local churches everywhere. So as a result, if you are like me, working out how to make services meaningful for the people who will gather, if you are trying to shape services that draw the human heart towards God then maybe this song could help you too. We've made it available now at Hillsong.com/eastersingle as a free download. It is off our Live worship album that comes out in July 2013. It's a sneak preview but I am of the opinion that if it can help, then let's share!
Let us know if you like it or send us a video of you using it. Would love to be inspired by the creativity and retelling of the Gospel story in other churches.
